Age-proof bureaucrats of UPA II

Pradeep Kumar
Present: Defence Secretary.
To become: Chief Vigilance Commissioner.
A 1972 batch IAS officer, Kumar was to retire on July 30. But he will soon take charge as the new CVC after P.J. Thomas had to quit over his tainted past. Kumar was scheduled to retire on September 29, 2009, as the defence production secretary. But two months before that he was made defence secretary.

Nirupama Rao
Present: Foreign Secretary.
To become: India's ambassador to the US.
The 1973 IFS batch topper is all set to become envoy to the US after her retirement on July 31. Earlier scheduled to retire on December 31, 2010, she was given an extension for 7 months.

S.S. Menon
Present: National Security Advisor.
Earlier: Foreign Secretary.
An IFS officer of 1972 batch, Menon retired as foreign secretary in July 2009. A few months later, he was appointed the NSA. Menon had earlier served as India's envoy in Israel, Sri Lanka, China and Pakistan.

Ashok Chawla
Present: Competition Commission of India (CCI) chairman.
Earlier: Foreign Secretary.
An IAS officer of 1973 cadre, Chawla retired in January 2011. He was immediately appointed chairman of a committee on allocation, pricing and utilisation of natural resources. In June, he was made the CCI chief.

Meera Shankar
Present: Ambassador to the US.
Earlier: Served in the PMO.
Nirupama Rao's batchmate in the IFS and formerly with the PMO, the well-connected Shankar got two extensions as the US envoy (Nov-Dec 2010 & Jan-July 2011). Shankar was scheduled to retire on Oct 31, 2010.

P.C. Haldar
Present: Interlocutor for peace talks with insurgent groups in Assam.
Earlier: Intelligence Bureau chief.
A 1970 batch IPS officer, Haldar was the IB chief from January 2007 to December 2008. He was first made a member of the committee on intelligence reforms and later appointed interlocutor for talks with Assam insurgent groups.

M.K. Narayanan
Present: Governor of West Bengal.
Earlier: National Security Advisor (NSA).
He was the NSA until January 2010. He was appointed to this post on January 25, 2005. He offered to resign as NSA after the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai, but his resignation was not accepted by Manmohan Singh.

K. M. Chandrasekhar
Present: Vice-chairperson of the Kerala State Planning Board.
Earlier: Cabinet Secretary.
He was appointed vice-chairperson of the Kerala State Planning Board within two days of his retirement as Cabinet Scretary. As a close confidant of the PM, Chandrasekhar (1970 batch IAS) received two extensions as Cabinet Secretary.

ESL Narasimhan
Present: Governor of Andhra Pradesh.
Earlier: Governor of Chhattisgarh.
Former Director of Intelligence Bureau (1968 batch IPS), Narasimhan became Andhra Pradesh Governor in 2009. Prior to that, he was Chhattisgarh governor between 2007 and 2010. In December 2009, he took additional charge of Andhra before formally assuming full charge in January 2010.
