Women defying regressive rituals

Kate Middleton's omission of the word 'obey' from her wedding vows finds an echo back home in India. Way back in 1997, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, had done away with quite a few slokas from the wedding mantras. The example that Priyanka had set is slowly becomingpopular among young Indian brides.

Kate MiddletonThere are brides who are doing away with what they feel are 'regressive'rituals - kanyadaan for instance. Kanyadaan, literally translated would mean "gifting the girl" and as per Hindu rituals the father of the bride gifts the girl to the groom. The act is considered to be something that all 'dutiful' fathers must perform. Well, many an adamant bride these days refuse to let their father perform the 'gifting' act. They refuse to be a gift of any sort. There are others who are leaving out many other rituals so that weddings are less
tedious and more enjoyable. Jasleen Kochhar of Bougainvilla Designs tells us that she has planned a wedding for a family "where the priest doesn't dictate each and everything".
