Guardiola begins charm offensive in bid to undercut Catalans' sense of entitlement

BARCELONA coach Pep Guardiola has warned his players that Manchester United pose a ''great'' threat to the Catalan club's hopes of a second Champions League title in three years. At the club's Saint Joan Despi training ground on Saturday, Guardiola fielded question after reverential question, patiently reminding his audience in Catalan, Spanish and English that his team were not predestined to win. In essence: take us off the pedestal.

His cautious respect for United and Alex Ferguson is not a polite pose. He wants his players to feel ''the right amount of fear'' when they walk out on to the Wembley pitch this week and Guardiola is clearly concerned that the praise heaped upon his men could act like saccharine quicksand. Many great teams have been undone by arrogance.
